  • Caregivers: Do you ever take trips without your person with Parkinson’s?

My mom recently took a trip to New York City. She’s my dad’s main caregiver and doesn’t usually feel comfortable leaving him on his own. But she managed to get him support for the weekend and had a great trip.

Do you ever take trips without your person with Parkinson’s? If so, what do you do to eliminate the stress of leaving them behind?

I have in the past. With my sister, and with her family. My last trip was 2018. For a day, we were called home as my dad fell, and that sped up his passing. We missed that, but my husband and son were there to help my mom when my passed, and was in the ER. He was also able to fill in on a doctors appointment during his cancer treatments when either my sister or I or both would go. But as he has progressed, I would not go away for half a day now. He needs too much attention.

That’s nice. No I never take a trip without my husband and he needs a bit of assistance so I don’t think it will be much of a trip. What do you all think?

It’s great to hear your mom had a wonderful trip, Mary-Beth! As a caregiver, I understand the stress of leaving a loved one with Parkinson’s. I plan short getaways and ensure proper care is in place. Vacation Rental Pros reviews have helped me find excellent, safe accommodations for my trips.

My wife is my caregiver and whose help I rely on for shopping, cooking etc., and every night to put a thick gauze pad on my nose with non-allergic strips to hold it on, to prevent lesions from the CPAP mask for sleep apnea. I am learning to do it for myself in the mirror (darn difficult with shaky hands) so that she can get away without me to stay with friends. She must, to avoid burn-out and to get a change. Other friends offer to do shopping etc

Of course I do… Without remorse and without guilt….

Provkdkng care in my absence is just another to-do in preparation for my trips.

I took my “bucket list” trip to England last Spring. My wife had a 7 day respite care stay at a nursing home. She has other medical issues besides PD. Unfortunately the level of care is substandard. That was the 4th care facility, we’ve tried. I’m pretty much resigned to the fact my travel days are over.

My biggest concern with my wife was long trips by car and lack of family type restrooms at rest stops as she had mobility and balance problems.

My wife and I have always had an extremely close relationship and are very close friends too. Before retirement our careers required us to travel separately and we missed each other terribly. Now that we’re retired I have no desire to travel without her even though her PD is progressing and there are days it takes a toll on me.

Meditation relieves the stress and anxiety, helping both of us to cope. Additionally, we both realize at our age and previous health conditions that tomorrow is definitely not a given and time is clearly not on our side. As a result we simply and sincerely enjoy our moments and time together. I have no desire to travel without her.

I have this opportunity to travel because I share the care of my grandmother with my mother. And it turns out that sometimes I have free time for myself. But it’s not only about traveling, for example, I started to devote time to sports to distract myself from everyday problems and now my absolute new love is https://betterme.world/articles/wall-pilates-benefits/. These types of training have a good effect on my mental health and really help me to keep fit.
