Last month, Jamie Askari wrote about embracing optimism despite the constant challenges that Parkinsons provides. As a caregiver, she knows how difficult it can be to stay positive in the face of the disease. But she also thinks that optimism is a key part of staying grounded.
How do you manage to stay optimistic? Do you ever try to re-frame…[Read more]

Mary Beth Skylis started the topic Have you always been an introvert? in the forum Parkinson's Disease Symptoms 1 week ago
My dad has always been easy to navigate different social scenes. He fits in just about everywhere. But as Parkinson’s progresses, I think he’s come to prefer more introverted settings. I suspect that he always identified as an introvert, and that he just leaned more into his tendencies recently. But I’d love to hear about your exp…[Read more]

Mary Beth Skylis started the topic Which tools do you find most helpful in the management of Parkinsons? Why? in the forum Living With Parkinson's Disease 2 weeks ago
Last year, I came upon a few different adaptive clothing brands. They provided shirts that are easier to close than conventional shirts. They also have pants with magnetic closures and slip on shoes that look like they’re laced. After trying a few different products, my dad quickly became a fan of the shoes. He loved the look, support, and s…[Read more]

Mary Beth Skylis started the topic How has your life changed since undergoing Deep Brain Stimulation? Are you glad you had the surgery? in the forum Living With Parkinson's Disease 3 weeks ago
I recently wrote an article about my dad’s Parkinson’s journey. In it, I discussed some of the things that changed after he underwent DBS. He halved his medication doses. His off-period dyskinesia almost disappeared. And he put on about 20 pounds (which he needed to do).
If you’ve undergone DBS, I’d love to hear more about your experien…[Read more]

Thanks, Ally! I have a few projects in the works. But my current focus is on joy. What is it? How do we find it? Is it something that everyone experiences? I haven’t laid out a plan yet, but I think that’s a great idea. And maybe I will 🙂 I love your strategy. That’s an awesome theme. Do you have specific projects that you’re working on?

Alan,
Thank you for your kind and thoughtful comments. Parkinson’s is such a tricky subject because it takes all the good and evil in the world and muddles it together. But I’m truly comforted to know that our forums and discussions are helping others (thanks to people like you).
My dad isn’t very quick to talk about the things that impact him…[Read more]

What a great name, Mark! I always feel a little bit better when I remember not to take myself so seriously. Humor helps with that.

Tom, I love this. My dad jokes that he’s the best jigger of the fishing group. You definitely put a smile on my face. What a difference perspective can make!
