“Yes, I’m bein’ followed by a moonshadow/ Moonshadow, moonshadow/ Leapin’ and hoppin’ on a moonshadow/ Moonshadow, moonshadow.” — Cat Stevens

If I had to choose only one musician to listen to for the rest of my life, it’d likely be Yusuf Islam, better known as Cat Stevens. His melodies, which echoed through my childhood on my dad’s stereo, evoke memories of the simplicity of life while growing up in the 1970s. His music was also a constant companion during my teenage years, and even today it offers me solace and inspiration.

My appreciation for his song “Moonshadow” is even deeper today as I reflect on my husband’s diagnosis of early-onset Parkinson’s disease and its resulting symptoms. Parkinson’s can often lead to the loss of speech and overall independence, among many other challenges.

A song’s meaning is often open to interpretation by the listener, which allows us to explore its layers and look for things that relate to our own lives. When I used to listen to “Moonshadow,” I’d hear the lyrics through the lens of loss, imagining it as a relentless dark cloud following the protagonist around and taking away the use of his hands, eyes, legs, and mouth.

Over the years, though, as I listened more carefully to the words, I began to see other possible interpretations. As an adult, I’ve discovered a richer understanding of the song, which appears to me now as concerned with finding light and guidance amid the darkness. This interpretation adds depth that I hadn’t considered before.

Instead of focusing on losing the ability to work, cry, walk, or talk, I think the song highlights what one gains from each loss. For example, although the protagonist may have lost the ability to see the world’s colors, he’s now free of the sadness brought on by tears. Despite his suffering and pain, the moon’s light has found him and seems to act as his guide.

For me, this powerful song serves as a reminder to seek the good in every situation — “The Bright Side” — even when faced with adversity. It inspires me to recognize that something positive always emerges from our struggles, highlighting the resilience within us all.

Jamie,
Thank you for your uplifting and meaningful words. I plan to play Cat’s “Tea for the Tillerman” album today and listen carefully to “Moonshadow” again. As a caregiver for my love, as we battle the Parkinson giant, being able to see “the light” is some days our only hope.. Please continue to offer inspiration with your words for all of us.
