Does anyone in your family have Parkinson’s?
Posted by Mary Beth Skylis on August 12, 2024 at 1:51 pmFor the longest time, it was generally accepted that Parkinson’s doesn’t seem to carry genetic factors. But there’s a little research that’s starting to challenge that assumption. Check out this article on our main site.

Yes – my father had Parkinsons. He died about 2 years before I was diagnosed.
Also my maternal uncle had PSP (progressive supranuclear palsy).

Do you have a support system? I know it can be hard to navigate Parkinsons alone.

Yes … My maternal uncle had PD and he had the LRRK-2 genetic mutation … I also have it … his daughter (my cousin) also had LRRK-2 as does her daughter but neither have PD … her son does not carry the gene …
A cousin on my father’s side also has PD, but we don’t know if she’s carrying the genetic mutation …

Yes, my grandmother has Parkinson’s. I try to help her as much as I can, and together with my mother we try to make her life better. But because of all this, I started to forget about the basic things I need, such as taking care of myself. That’s why I’ve recently been taking a little more time for myself. I started going to the gym to distract myself from my problems at least for a little bit, and I also got interested in cooking healthy recipes. The last thing I tried was this https://betterme.world/articles/meals-under-300-calories/ I was very pleased with everything and now I realize how important it is to remember and take care of myself.

My maternal grandmother had Parkinsons from age 57 until her death at age 77.
My father had Parkinsons from about age 75 until his death at age 87.
I have had Parkinsons since age 56 and I am now 67.
I have been an avid exerciser since age 17 and currently exercise 12+ hours per week (weightlifting; gym cardio machines; mountain biking; snowshoeing, and running stadium stairs). I generally exercise 29-30 days per month. Exercise is my primary ‘therapy and medication’ for Parkinsons. I am still well enough that I am the caretaker for a handicapped adult child.
