My husband has had Parkinson’s for 30 years. I found putting his shoes on extremely difficult. I was told about “Billy Shoes”. They look like regular shoes but are fastened with a zip. My husband loves them and they make my job easier. When at home, he finds sheepskin “Uggs” (slippers), extremely comfortable.

    Cheers,

    Jean

  • My husband has had Parkinson’s for over 29 years.  He likes shirts with stud fasteners. For footwear, I recently purchased Billy shoes for him.  Now he doesn’t want to wear other shoes.  These shoes look like other lace up footwear but they actually zip up.

My husband has had PD for 29 years. At his stage he uses continence pants all the time. Recently he started having one sachet of Movicol (active ingredients: Macrogol, Sodium bicarbonate, sodium chloride, potassium chloride) in the mornings. It has relieved his constipation and as a result, his medication works much better. Of course, there is no substitute for a good diet and plenty of fluids.

My husband who has had PD for 29yrs now has an alternating air mattress. He is pretty immobile at night and this mattress helps with pressure care. The mattress is made of foam with air “cells” that inflate and deflate alternately. It is like the ones used in hospitals and requires an electric pump. He also has a self help pole, a bed rail on one side and a bed pole/grab rail on the other to help with turning. Needless to say, the bed is an electric adjustable bed also. Before he had this equipment, he liked a firmer mattress otherwise he felt “bogged down” and unable to move.

I prepare my husbands medications weekly. He has 6 lots of meds a day so I use a circular plastic pillbox which has 7 compartments (It’s actually a box for 7 days but we use it for one days pills. I have labeled the compartments with the time his pills need to be taken, the seventh compartment is used for vitamins/supplements etc. All medications are kept in the refrigerator because we live in a tropical climate. Each day I take out a new pillbox which he keeps in his room or, if he goes out, it’s small enough to fit into his shirt pocket. He has a mobile phone which has an alarm set for his various pill times (Unfortunately, sometimes the alarm doesn’t go off but he’s been taking pills so long – 29yrs, we usually remember in time.)
