Just wanted to find out if you have seen deteriorating once the settings on the DBS has been changed. My mother a month ago had the dr change the frequency. Which has affected her weeks later where she can’t talk and struggles to eat. They have now changed the settings back to where it was. But I’m not sure how long I need to wait and see the difference. It’s extremely sad to see this happen

Hello Simon,<div> I have DBS surgery 2 months ago. In the process of adjusting the first time they had turned it up too high and I was unable to talk. Actually it even distorted my face a little bit. If someone is unable to talk I would suggest turning it down.</div>

I’m so sorry she’s having to go through this. I know it can be upsetting. DBS Settings often need to be fine-tuned, and even changed. I had one change in my settings, which resulted in my losing all my consonants! No one could understand me and my throat felt tight all the time. My suggestion is you let her doctor know immediately if there is a new symptom that is adversely affecting her function.

It seems that adjusting DBS settings can have varying effects on patients, and it may take some time to adjust to new settings. Some patients may experience side effects, like your mom did, but thankfully, they’ve reverted to the original settings.
