What role does physical activity play in your Parkinson’s story?
Posted by Ally on September 25, 2025 at 8:32 pmMany people find that staying active helps with symptoms and mood. Many people in this community credit Rock Steady Boxing, walking, or other forms of movement with helping them maintain their physical and mental health.
What type of exercise or movement has been most helpful for you?

Although I am past retirement age (several times!) i continue to work in the vineyard. Walking over rough ground I believe, is helping my balance.

I walk my dog every day but it’s always stop and go so it’s not really “exercise”. I do try to walk by myself but have lacked consistency. I have always been an exerciser, until recently, and strongly believe the benefits, especially having Parkinson’s. I do get at least 8,000 steps a day and am always moving around the house and outside. However, I don’t feel like it is enough. How many of you do vigorous exercise? Moderate? I’ve read that’s what we need to help stop progression. How do you stay motivated when often exercise is hard!?

I think it’s essential. Until some other issues put me in the injured list recently, Rock Steady Boxing was 3x a week. Currently, I’m doing yard work, exercise, and weight training but I really miss my RSB and my Parky friends and coaches…

Hi SubVet, have you recovered and made it back to RSB yet? How do you stay active in the winter (or perhaps you live somewhere where you can be outside year ’round?)?

Staying active makes a tremendous difference for me. I stay active and move smooth and peacefully, I stop moving for so much and sit down at my desk, for more than half an hour, I start shaking like a chainsaw.

Hi Christina, thanks for sharing. What are some of your favourite ways to stay active? Have you had to modify your activities since your diagnosis?
