I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease 9 years ago at the age of 47. I started with a left hand tremor that moved to my left leg and eventually into my right arm. I have been physically active my entire life. Even before Parkinson’s I went to the gym 7 days a week and since my Parkinson’s diagnosis I continue to go 7 days a week. Over the years my workout routine has gotten a bit stale. My wife and I recently attended a 3-week fitness camp in Thailand. That trip changed my life. At first I was very hesitant because I was not sure how much of the physical training I could do. For 3 weeks we did 4 to 5 hours a day, 5 days a week doing a combination of strength, flexibility and high intensity interval training. I spent 22-1/2 years in the military and had never done physical training that intense before. All that said, I completely surprised myself by what I was capable of doing. I think I was just afraid to try for fear of losing my balance or having limited range of motion. Since coming home from that trip, I have completely changed my fitness routine. My weekly routine consists of yoga for flexibility and balance, treadmill, elliptical and stair-master for cardio, and full body kettlebell routines for strength and stability and functionality. It is amazing what your body and mind can do when you challenge it. After 3 months of implementing this new routine, my physical gait and posture have changed and I now have my arm swing back. I am very encouraged by my progress and more determined that ever to slow the progression of this disease.
