Hello! I hope it’s OK to post this and it is a little long but I think it’s great to know about.

Free for Parkinson’s folks looking for help with speech:

Shenandoah University (Leesburg, Virginia campus), will hold ten weekly speech sessions every semester for Parkinson’s sufferers who live in Arizona, California, and Virginia. The sessions start in January and are in-person or virtual; there are no licensing restrictions for virtual attendees from other countries. Sessions will be conducted by experienced university speech program grad students led by Myra Schatzki, speech-language pathologist and director of education at the Shenandoah communication sciences and disorders division. She is licensed in the Parkinson’s Voice project SPEAK OUT!, an evidence based method of speech training. The program is effective with speech and swallowing for Parkinson’s patients.

I cannot speak highly enough about Speak Out! I have been a client at the Richardson, TX, clinic for around 13-14 years. The therapy is effective and important for regaining and maintaining the voices of people with Parkinson’s. The same muscles are used for speaking and swallowing, so strengthening the voice is important to help us avoid choking and aspiration issues. Better quality of life, y’all. By the way, 90% of Parkinson’s patient will develop speaking or swallowing issues. So, if your voice is getting softer, people ask you to repeat yourself, cough while eating, your voice sounds gravely, GET TO THE NEAREST SPEECH LANGUAGE THERAPIST OR THERAPY AND RESEARCH CENTER and get to work. Go to parkinsonvoiceproject.org to find the nearest provider, regardless of where you live in the USA. While you’re there take time to view the video “What is Parkinson’s?”
