  • Anyone else have difficulty accepting the need to use a cane or walker?

I had no difficulty with using a walker when going on longer outings outside of work. It took an accident at work during which I sprained my ankle to succumb to the necessity of walking with a cane on my job.

I use cane for short to medium distance ( 20 yrs ). Rolater for longer distances. Having PT using the LSVT BIG program really helps with mobility. Simple sit to stand exercised strengthens the legs. I decorated my Rolater with Corvette sticker to add humor to the situation.

I’ve used a walking stick of one kind or another (a cromach, a blackthorn stick, a lovely old oak stick whose top unscrews to reveal a penny whistle) for 40 years or more when my wife and I would go for our evening walks. Now that it comes in handy for more balance purposes, it’s just an old friend.

When it is noticed that I need a walking stick for balance, people often make space for me, offer an arm in support or courteously ask if I need any help. I think a well-made, antique or silver-topped stick, indicates that I take the need seriously enough to try to turn it into a virtue!

That’s a really thoughtful perspective. It’s true, sometimes the way we present these aids can shift how others perceive them and respond to us. I’ve noticed the same thing, people tend to be more considerate when they see someone using a walking stick or cane, especially one that stands out. It’s interesting how something functional can also carry a bit of personality or even dignity.
