Advice Regarding Symptoms
Hello Everyone,
I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease (PD) in August. I’ve never had a close relationship with anyone who has Parkinson’s, and I don’t have any family members who have experienced it, so I’m completely new to understanding the disease.
Fortunately, we live only about five miles away from the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center at Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, so excellent care is available to us. However, my appointments with the doctor are pretty spaced out as she has a busy schedule, so I’m seeking your insights.
I spent 25 years pastoring a 6,000-member church, so I’m familiar with managing stress. In recent months, however, things have changed. It seems that any relationship drama or time pressure sends me reeling, resulting in severe dizziness. This dizziness is debilitating; I often find myself confined to a chair in my living room, with my eyes closed, trying to minimize movement and stop the world from spinning. It is also possible to have dizziness when I cannot attribute it to stress. Is this a symptom of PD?
Additionally, I can have a wonderful day with no symptoms, enjoying various activities, only to be followed by a bad day of lethargy when I’m once again sitting in a chair, listening to the TV or an audiobook. The unpredictability makes it difficult for me to plan, and I’m reluctant to make commitments, not knowing if I’ll have a good or bad day. Is this also a symptom of PD?
If either or both of these experiences are related to PD, are there any medications or therapies that might help? I’m concerned that this might all be in my head and that everything will be fine if I just improve my mindset. Unfortunately, that hasn’t worked so far. I welcome any thoughts you may have.
