Barry Block replied to the topic Changing meds? in the forum Diagnosis Information and General Questions 5 months, 2 weeks ago

I recommend that if the current medicine is working, don’t mess with it. I tried changing my Sinemet CR to Stalevo and wound up with diarrhea. It’s often better to increase dosage rather than to change. Also note that medicines such has Sinemet cannot be taken with meals, particularly with protein-based foods as they interfere with brain-barrier…[Read more]

Barry Block replied to the topic B12 Injections For Stopping Tremors in the forum Parkinson's Disease alternative treatments 6 months, 2 weeks ago

Thanks for the info. Please explain what 1/2 means as I am not familiar with that terminology. Does it mean one half dose or one of two daily doses?

I too have the LRRK2 G2019S variant. What brand and dose of dibenconzide do you take. Is it chewable or sublingual?

I’ll have my doctor give me a b12 injection. If it works, I can buy injectable B12 online. Ironically, it’s sold to pet owners, but cyanocobalamin is the same stuff. I’m a retired Dr., so I can self-inject it as necessary.

I have been taking sublingual B12 5,000 mcg for two weeks. So far there is little or no change in my tremors. Someone o this site said that sublingual was as effective as IM injections. What have others found?

Barry Block replied to the topic How do you remind yourself to take your medication? in the forum Parkinson's Disease Medications 10 months, 1 week ago

I too rely on Alexa, however what I’ve learned is that it’s more important to time my Sinemet so as not to interfere with my meals, particular ones with high protein. Taking my meds an hour prior to meals or two hours after has eliminated the off periods I once experienced. This is because the carbidopa does not have to compete with protein in…[Read more]

Barry Block replied to the topic Yogurt: good or bad for PD? in the forum Diagnosis Information and General Questions 1 year ago

I take Sinemet at 7AM and Fage Greek yogurt with peanut butter at 9 AM to avoid or minimize any protein conflict.

Barry Block replied to the topic Has anyone tried Mucuna Pruriens (Dopa Mucuna) as a C/L replacement? in the forum Parkinson's Disease alternative treatments 1 year ago

I use Mucina Pruriens (Nutracost) 800 Mg as a supplement to Sinemet CR. I also eat Fava beans as snack. These supplements are helpful without side-effects.

Barry Block replied to the topic Have you found that going to the gym increases your energy? in the forum Parkinson's Disease and exercise 1 year ago

I work out virtually 5 times a week. It is the most important and effective treatment for PD. I combine aerobics (Zumba), weight training (5 lbs), and yoga/stretching and include balance exercises. I also try to take a mile walk when the weather permits.  I am 73 and my PD has only progressed slightly in 3 years.

Barry Block replied to the topic Do you still drive? in the forum Living With Parkinson's Disease 1 year, 4 months ago

I stopped driving about 3 years ago. I could probably still drive if I had to, but why take the risk? Besides using Lyft and Uber save me money. No more high insurance bills, gas, tolls, parking, depreciation, registration and inspection fees, and maintenance.

I will have no hesitation, The odds of a PD patient being hospitalized or dying are at least four times greater that of a non-PD patient! Res Ipsa Loquitur!

Barry Block replied to the topic Turmeric in the forum Diagnosis Information and General Questions 1 year, 6 months ago

I just started it a few days ago. I bought capsules from Amazon (Nature’s Nutrition 1950 mg TID. I tried writing to the study’s authors to find a source, product and dosage, but got no reply. I not sure that Turmeric curcumin is equal to turmeric essential oils, but at about 10 cents a capsule it’s a low cost low risk. The indications are joint,…[Read more]

Barry Block replied to the topic Mannitol, a sugar, has given me back my life! in the forum Parkinson's Disease Medications 1 year, 7 months ago

I have to agree with Denise. Exercise is the very best thing that helps the symptoms of PD. I exercise 5 days a week with virtual classes (both aerobically and with 5 lb. weights). I have not increased my sinemet CR in 2 years and have no dyskensias or freezing. My balance is better than most 72 year olds and my cognitive abilities are only…[Read more]

Barry Block replied to the topic Mannitol, a sugar, has given me back my life! in the forum Parkinson's Disease Medications 1 year, 7 months ago

I tried mannitol and all it gave me was loose stools. I have the LRRK variant of PD, so perhaps it works on other types of PD. I did have good results eating Fava beans, which are a natural source of L-dopa. These days, I add a daily Macuna capsule to my sinemet CR.

Barry Block replied to the topic How long does it take to find the right medication balance? in the forum Parkinson's Disease Medications 1 year, 9 months ago

If you have a great PD doctor and a little luck, you will start on the right dose. I started on Sinemet 3 x a day. Later, when I reported sleeping problems, he added a 4th dose at night. I also find that a bag of fava beans or taking a macuna capsule helps when I need a boost.
