    • Hi Russell, Welcome to the forum. I am the moderator, diagnosed in 2015 with PD and I am 64 years old. Are there any topics of discussion you would like to see on the forum?

      • Nice to “meet” you. So far as the forum goes, and in many ways PD too, still very much finding my way. Locally we don’t have any “movement disorder specialists” and so am feeling a bit concerned that we, the patients, might not be getting all the “good oil” — reliable information – that we should be. Initially “mis-diagnosed” with Essential Tremor, but very quickly challenged that — a local pharmacist, whose father is a neurologist overseas, had provided me with a differential diagnostic questionnaire from the ET Society — and my responses matched PD rather than ET, so diagnosis is an issue. Other than that, trying to decide what the “best” medication to be on is a queston – I went straight on to Dopamine, but should I have gone on to something like Nortriptyline, instead, delaying the dopamine — just in case I should live long enough to get worried about the effects of long-term dopamine treatment. Then exercise – best form for staving off (further) cognitive deterioration.
Trying to develop website to try to provide these answers for others: initial diagnosis’ initial medications — even for those in their 60s — I’m little younger than you; and exercise for maintenance of mental functioning.
Continue to be awed by how great ParkinsonsNewsToday is — didn’t know about the forum till today.
Not having any family it’s important to maintain as much independence as possible.
Sorry if all this seems too much 😀

        • Russell, thank you so much for posting.. I too live in an area where the pickings are slim for knowledgeable movement disorder specialists. I have struggled with the meds and you can follow my journey in my monthly column: https://parkinsonsnewstoday.com/category/slow-is-the-new-fast-a-column-by-jean-mellano/ Thus far I have written 4 columns and my next one is on what helped me the most which will be published the 1st week in August. I also have no caretaker and live in an independent home in a CCRC (continuing care retirement community) which will allow me to age in place. I do hope you find this website useful, I think they are doing a great job. Thank you again for your feedback..
