My Dad (diagnosed in 2013) commonly tells me that stress seems to exacerbate his symptoms. If he runs into a financial predicament, or something doesn’t go according to plan, he often experiences worsened tremors. One way that he’s learned to mitigate these changes is through diet and exercise. How do you minimize the stress in your life? And what…[Read more]

Parkinsons disease comes with a lot of different struggles. My Dad has been married to my Mom for over thirty years, and they’ve had to learn how to manage obstacles like nightmares and aggressive thrashing. My Mom is continuously learning when to step in to help my Dad and when she should let him complete a task himself. How has Parkinson’s…[Read more]

Mary Beth Skylis started the topic Does it get easier to witness the decline? in the forum A Forum for Parkinson's Disease Caregivers 1 week, 1 day ago
This week, my heart broke into a bunch of fragments when I observed my Dad’s cognitive decline. During one particular conversation, I tried to explain to him what a “Sherpa” is in three different ways. I spent some time in Nepal previously, and he has always followed my journeys religiously. So the concept of a “Sherpa” wasn’t new to him. But this…[Read more]

Mary Beth Skylis started the topic Do you have a morning stretching routine? in the forum Parkinson's Disease and exercise 1 week, 6 days ago
One of the first things my Dad does when he gets up is stretches. Since stiffness is often a tough symptom to mitigate while you’re battling Parkinson’s disease, he finds that the routine helps to lubricate his muscles for the day. Do you have a morning stretching routine? If so, which stretches are your favorite ones? If not, why not?

i had my first Pfizer dose on 2/4. I woke up the next day paralyzed on my left side (the side most affected by PD). By sheer force of willpower and whatever strength I had, I was able to get out of the bed in about an hour. Then I was my usual crappy PD self the rest the day. Not looking forward to the second shot 🙁

My Dad has been drinking coffee for his whole life. But at this point in his life, his perfect brew is split into half caffeinated coffee and half decaf coffee. I’ve always been curious if caffeine consumption impacts my Dad’s medications because I know it impacts mine. Do you think that caffeine impacts your drugs? Have you ever conducted any…[Read more]

Rich and Jo,
I always wonder if I’m out of line when I poke at my Dad with humor, too. But it seems to soften the blow. I’m glad that you’ve both found ways to keep your spirits high.

Jeffery Hill replied to the topic skiing in the forum Parkinson's Disease and exercise 2 weeks, 6 days ago
I gave up downhill a couple of years ago because I found that my reaction time (initiating turns) was declining, and I didn’t want this to end with an accident. I continue cross country skiing on flat terrain (like frozen lakes) but I’m finding that my technique is deteriorating. One side seems to perform differently than the other, and I d…[Read more]

Beth, my Dad has lost some of his sense of smell. When he was diagnosed with PD in 2013, he started seeing a holistic doctor in conjunction with his Neurologist. Hi Ian. A flutter of a tremor in my left thumb was the first symptom that caught my attention.
