Phil Gattis replied to the topic Do you identify as disabled? in the forum Living With Parkinson's Disease 5 months, 2 weeks ago
Of course I’m disabled. That’s a term that accurately describes my situation as a veteran receiving a disability benefit as a result of my military service . I don’t stress out because of labeling. I’m still me, and I love myself, and my wife/caregiver, children, church brothers and sisters, and many others love and support me. So why shou…[Read more]

Phil Gattis replied to the topic Do you struggle with sleep disturbances? in the forum Parkinson's Disease Symptoms 9 months ago
My neurologist also suggested that I try to consume any alcohol earlier in the evening, as it kinda wreaks heck on my sleep pattern, while Melatonin fits well into my body’s natural sleep pattern.

I take a cup of Yogi Bedtime tea, which includes valerian root extract, along with a 10mg Melatonin, which starts with a strong effect, then levels off to a continuous release.
I brew another cup of the tea, which I put on my dresser to drink if/when I awake at night & get up to pee. This was my neurologist’s suggestion, & it works well, h…[Read more]

Phil Gattis replied to the topic Are you a part of any Parkinson’s support groups? in the forum Living With Parkinson's Disease 9 months, 1 week ago
I’m a fairly regular attendee of the oldest Parkinson’s support group in the US. PDSGMHV stands for Parkinson’s Disease Support Group in the Mid-Hudson Valley. I always come out of a meeting comforted and energized.

Valerian tea, people! I mean it!

at bedtime, I take 10mg Melatonin
and in addition, a cup of valerian tea.
I brew an additional cup to take cold if/when I awake in the night to help me get back to sleep.
This is almost a failsafe regimen for me.

Phil Gattis replied to the topic Turmeric in the forum Diagnosis Information and General Questions 1 year, 10 months ago
I’ve been taking Turmeric for several years now. It very nicely replaced an NSAID in controlling pain/inflammation. Long-term NSAID use has its danger of side effects, so that in itself makes it worth it. However, a cure for Parkinson’s it is not.

This study was conducted by/at University of Florida. Can anyone find out more about it? Specifically, is there any commercial product that can introduce the ‘good’ gut bacteria?

I can’t see how to start a new forum. I think this potential breakthrough deserves one, although there doesn’t seem to be enough information to research it further.

What helped us is that, from early on, we realized that it isn’t my diagnosis, but *our* diagnosis, and we are a team fighting this thing called Parkinson’s. She is with me at every appointment. We discuss every change in medication and routine.
For example, I started getting up 10 minutes earlier in order to facilitate 15 minutes of P…[Read more]

Phil Gattis replied to the topic What have you learned about Parkinson's since the diagnosis? in the forum Diagnosis Information and General Questions 2 years, 3 months ago
2nd most important treatment is humor. my current favorite one-liner: “I’m having short-term memory loss; I’ll talk to you next week.”
most important treatment: exercise
However, C/L initially helped reduce symptoms significantly, so I hesitate to drop Rx treatment, but I rank it in 3rd place.
