  • What’s one thing that Parkinson’s has made you rethink?

Living with Parkinson’s changes your perspectives. Sometimes it changes how you view work, exercise, friendships, travel, and other life priorities.

What’s one thing that Parkinson’s has made you rethink? And how has it shifted your perspective?

It has made me rethink my priorities and my identity. Don’t sweat the small stuff – most everything else falls into that category. I may have Parkinson’s, but IT DOESN’T HAVE ME !

I have to agree with the poster above. My dreams of building furniture, woodcarving, clock repair, building electronic gadgets–all gone. I am rapidly losing skills I spent a lifetime developing because I can’t see clearly due to double vision and I can’t do intricate work with shaky hands. I am finding that there are things I can do, however, and often they are quite rewarding. PD has forced me to reach out to others in need and help them cope with their issues.

I’m really sorry to hear about those losses, Baptl. It must be really frustrating to have to let go of hobbies that you once loved. Have you taken up any new hobbies that are more Parkinson’s friendly?

Parkinson’s has made me rethink about my life in three areas:

    What I have done

    What I want to do

    How to move forward.

The worst thing that happened to me is that I started feeling sorry for myself. It took me over two years to get past that. In the last five years I have been putting the pieces back together.

I have realized that I have to be more deliberate in everything I do. I actually have to mindfully think about even the smallest of tasks.

One of the hardest things I have had to work on is letting people help me, even if it a simple task like opening the front door lock.

I struggle to let people help me, too, Shaky. But there’s a lot of research that shows that allowing people to help you is good for them, too. Maybe we can find comfort in that?

I can identify with your statements. Pre-thinking tasks and accepting help from others are necessary adjustments but aren’t easy to implement.

I also think that it can be hard to identify when you truly need help, which adds to the challenge.

Under “normal “ circumstances, many people are not comfortable with taking risks. However, PD makes it a necessity for us and we need to accept that.

I love this perspective, JillP. Where have you been taking risks in your life recently?
